The story of the restoration of a 1950s classic bicycle for a Land's End – John O'Groats charity ride in aid of Alzheimer's Society
We’ve done 44 miles today, bringing the total to 1,038 miles in 18 days. Not quite the 65 miles a day that I’d intended, but not bad. The Ellis-Briggs and I have climbed more than twice the height of Everest, and raised (so far) almost £2,800 for Alzheimer’s Society.
I feel quite proud of the achievement, I suppose – but perhaps more for the bike than for my own physical effort. It wasn’t easy building the Ellis-Briggs to a state where she could cope with the End-to-End. But she’s performed beautifully: safe, stable and delightful to ride. And the only things that gave significant trouble (chain and tyres) were modern components.
Here’s a little video of the great arrival…
Well done. All best wishes, Derek and Sonia

Many congratulations! Did you have a rain gauge fitted on the Ellis-Briggs? And have you always been that slim? Now, I have to break gently to you what has happened while you have been away on your bike…

You are terrifying. Full respect. I shall grudgingly add my donation to your estimable total. But you can think again if you’re expecting me to massage your thighs when you return.

Thanks, Roy, for your support and interest. Hope to meet in Lund sometime. It’s going to be hard readapting to the ‘real’ world, which seems to have descended into chaos in my absence…
