Old Bloke On An Old Bike

The story of the restoration of a 1950s classic bicycle for a Land's End – John O'Groats charity ride in aid of Alzheimer's Society

Training

It’s not a good idea to just hop on a bike and try to go from Land’s End to John O’Groats. There are real risks of heart failure or stroke induced by physical exertion. I’d say that I’m moderately fit – I cycle 5 miles each way to work most days all year round and I also do long tours in France each summer. So I guess I cycle something over 3,000 miles a year. I think I’ll need more preparation than that for LEJOG, so I will soon start planning a progressive programme of moderate training, building up to the 65 miles-a-day rate that I’ll need to maintain for LEJOG.
