The story of the restoration of a 1950s classic bicycle for a Land's End – John O'Groats charity ride in aid of Alzheimer's Society
Friday was my partner Ruth’s 60th birthday. We decided to meet family and friends for the weekend at the George Hotel in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
I cycled there from Colchester, starting at 4.45 a.m. and arriving around 5 p.m. It was the most successful long ride yet – 109.4 miles at 11.3 mph, with no significant navigational problems at all – not even in Cambridge. The bike performed really well and, apart from sore tendons in my right knee and ankle, I did OK too.
It was cold and there was a headwind, but the East Anglian countryside is very flat, and much of the LEJOG route will be quite a bit tougher…
