Old Bloke On An Old Bike

The story of the restoration of a 1950s classic bicycle for a Land's End – John O'Groats charity ride in aid of Alzheimer's Society

21 Jun 2016: Stage 10 completed

Started the day by visiting the Ellis Briggs shop to get some new inner tubes. I love the “Aladdin’s cave” nature of good bike shops. Here’s the bike back where she was made…

They kindly gave me a new Ellis Briggs water bottle…

After the horrible traffic around Shipley and Bingley, the ride took me up onto the lovely North York moors…

… past the canal lock at Gargrave…

… with a stop for tea at the splendid old station in Settle…

image

… and past some wonderful masses of yellow flag growing on the boggy moorland…

But it was another day of punctures… one in the back wheel (near-invisible bit of glass that worked its way through the tread) and one in the front (a 1cm cut in the tread). I’ve patched both tyres as best I can, but it can’t go on like this. There’s apparently a bike shop in Kirkby Lonsdale, so I’ll go there after breakfast and see if they can fit 2 new tyres for me.

Anyway, I’m comfortably settled in the B&B at Ireby, where the view is lovely…

    Hi Steve,
Really interesting reading and sorry to hear that your som has had to drop out.
I guess it would be pretty much impossible to undertake a ride of this length, without some punctures, but hope that these are the last.
    Keep up the good work
    Regards
    Colin

Thanks Colin. It has been a terrific experience, despite the problems.
