The story of the restoration of a 1950s classic bicycle for a Land's End – John O'Groats charity ride in aid of Alzheimer's Society
Sadly, my son Eric has had to drop out of our LEJOG attempt. This morning, his knee was very swollen and cycling was painful on the flat and impossible on a climb. So he is being driven back to Colchester to get medical help. It’s very sad – everything had been going well and we were enjoying the ride.
I’ve decided to continue alone and keep the effort going, in the hope of raising further donations to Alzheimer’s Society. But it’s a grimmer endeavour without Eric’s company and it’ll be much harder work.
So I’m now an unofficial one-man Ellis-Briggs team. I’m slightly encouraged by the example of a real one-man Ellis-Briggs team, Ken Russell, who won the 1952 Tour of Britain (at about three times my average speed). Unfortunately, the parallel is not very convincing…
Best wishes to both of you, Eric on his road to recovery, and you on your now lonelier road to JoG.
